It feels like only yesterday that I was on stage at Write The Docs Portland 2023 delivering a talk, receiving an ovation, and positive feedback from all the attendees. That memory will always be one for the books.
By the way, if you want to see my Write The Docs talk, you can watch it here.
I know it's been almost three months since I last wrote to you all, and some of you have emailed me to check up on me and find out why I disappeared. I just want to say thank you for caring.
A lot has happened between March and now and as much as I tried to show up for everything, I knew I had to deal with certain demons first. I have dealt with them and now I'm back.
How are y’all doing?
OK, unto what I have for you today.
Gems from WTD Portland 2023
I didn’t just speak at WTD, I also attended a couple of sessions and caught a glimpse of some new knowledge and quotes, that I think will be helpful to you too.
Text documentation with explanatory diagrams will always win: Everyone loves videos, but it takes 3 times longer to learn from videos compared to learning from text accompanied by pictures and diagrams. Furthermore, text is searchable, and text doesn’t impose the need to take it all in at once.
Metrics to track as a technical writer: Track everything, especially if it’s for upper management consumption. Execs usually appreciate metrics like page views and traffic. Measure and track everything you can, and let them decide which they like.

Recap from the Sustain Africa Session on Open Source Documentation.
More gems for you. Roughly three weeks ago, I had the pleasure of anchoring the Sustain Africa Session on Open Source Documentation. The Sustain Africa Summit is a one-day discourse that typically precedes the well-known yearly Open Source Africa Festival (OSCAFEST). A group of open-source users, contributors, maintainers, and enthusiasts gathered to discuss, learn, and share strategies for making open-source documentation more useful in helping users achieve their goals.
This article is a summary of the discussion that ensued.
